Calais cocoons are named after the town of Calais in northern France, famous for its production of mechanical lace. It was in Calais that, in the early 19th century, pioneering English industrialists set up the first looms with the aim of imitating handmade lace. A superb Calais Lace Museum traces the history of lace, a craft that first appeared in the 16th century.
